ENGL-100.
First-Year Composition (4)
Expository writing workshop, with attention to all the stages of the writing
process from generating ideas to refining drafts. Students will write
frequent short papers. The course will also introduce students to the
proper use of outside sources.
NOTE: This course is designed to prepare students for academic writing
in all disciplines. Skills taught include thesis formation, use of topic
sentences, various kinds of paragraph development, and transitions. Although
all modes of exposition will be used, essays of comparison/contrast and argumentation
will be emphasized.
Prerequisite: Writing Sample and prescriptive
writing workshop if need is identified.
ENGL-106e, Introduction to Creative Writing(4)
A mixed-genre introduction to writing fiction, poetry, and a least one other genre
(such as memoir or playwriting), in a workshop environment. Three hours per week.
Four semester hours.
ENGL-110e, Reading, Writing and
Research (4)
Students will practice critical reading and thinking skills and expository
writing skills based on readings in various disciplines. Exercises in
summarizing, paraphrasing, using quotations, analysis, and synthesis will prepare
them to write short thesis driven papers of analysis and argument, using sources. The
course emphasizes the research process and culminates with an MLA documented
research paper based on student inquiry.
Prerequisite: ENGL - 100.
ENGL-202, British Literature Since 1800

Survey of British literature from Romanticism and Victorianism through Modernism and
Postmodernism. Covers Wordsworth, Keats, Tennyson, Yeats, Joyce, Woolf and others,
presented in historical context. Four hours per week. Four semester hours

Prerequisite: ENGL - 201.
ENGL-205 Fiction
Writing (4)
A beginning course in the writing of fiction, with special attention to the
short story. The student will study technical aspects of the craft and
masterpieces of the genre. The student will write short stories, receive
critical responses, and make extensive revisions. Enrollment limited to 12
students. Three hours per week. Four semester hours
Prerequisite: ENGL-100.
ENGL-208. Advanced Expository Writing (4)
Practice, on an advanced level, in the writing and critical evaluation of
non-fictional prose. Enrollment is limited to 12 students per section.
Prerequisite: ENGL-100 or 102.
ENGL-209 Special Topics in Creative Writing
(4)
A workshop course in an area of creative writing not normally covered in
ENGL-205 and ENGL-206. Topics will vary.
Prerequisite: ENGL-100.
ENGL-230 Epics of the World (4)
Read in English translation, a specimen of Western epic, such as Homer's
Iliad and Odyssey or Vergil's Aeneid, is compared with a specimen of
non-Western epic, such as the Indian Mahabharata or the Persian Book of
Kings. Three hours per week.
