Federal Grants
Federal Pell Grants-This federal grant program is awarded
to high need students. You
must enroll in a minimum of one course a semester and maintain satisfactory
academic progress in order to continue to receive this assistance. Grants
are available in the fall and spring and range between $400 and $4000 per
academic year (amounts change annually). Students are considered for
this grant by filing the FAFSA.
Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans
Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans-This Stafford Loan program is federally
subsidized and is aimed at making funds available to students at a reasonable
variable interest rate. First year students, at least half-time (6
credits), may be eligible to borrow up to $2,625. Second year students may
borrow up to $3,500 while third and fourth year students may qualify for
a $5,500 Stafford Loan. The maximum total that may be borrowed as an
undergraduate is $23,000. Applications are available at local banks
and lending institutions, or the SFS Office, and should be filed directly
with the lender. Repayment does not begin until 6 months after graduation
or when a student ceases to be enrolled at least half-time.
Unsubsidized Stafford
Loans
Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans-This loan carries the same interest rate
and loan limits as the Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan. Although repayment
of principal does not begin until 6 months after graduation, borrowers are
expected to make quarterly (or monthly) interest payments while enrolled
in school.
Application
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the primary means
of applying for aid. This application serves as the required form for
all Federal and State financial aid programs. It should be filed before May
1 for aid in the following fall. In addition, the SFS Office will need
a completed Evening Student Application, Institutional Verification Form,
and copies of previous year tax returns and W2 forms. All forms are
available in the SFS Office. The Stafford Loan has a separate application
form obtained from the lender bank or the SFS Office. Application for
aid generally takes 4 to 6 weeks to process and must be made every year of
attendance.
Financial Aid Transcripts
Financial Aid Transcripts-If you have attended college prior to coming to
Ursinus, you must request a Financial Aid Transcript (a statement itemizing
your financial aid history) from each former college. This is a requirement,
whether or not you had aid at the prior institution(s). These forms
are available in the SFS Office, and must be completed by you and your former
college.
Satisfactory Progress
All students who receive financial assistance must maintain satisfactory
academic progress as determined by College policy. For details, request
the Satisfactory Progress Guidelines from the SFS Office.
